Firewood Cost and Heat By Species vs Oil, Propane, Gas and Electric

A cord of osage-orange holds more than twice the heat of a cord of eastern redcedar. See what yours is worth against the fuels in your state.

Data notes. Heat per cord: Utah State University Extension, Wood Heating, Table 1 (air-dried wood). Stove efficiency: EPA HHV, from the EPA database; the median is across 155 listed cordwood and crib-wood room heaters.

Fuel prices from EIA: heating oil and propane, residential, week of , excluding taxes (oil, propane; EIA surveys about 38 states, October to March); natural gas, residential, (EIA); electricity, residential, July 2026 (EIA Electric Power Monthly 5.6.A). Heat contents: heating oil 138,500 Btu/gal, propane 91,452 Btu/gal, natural gas 1,036 Btu/cu ft, electricity 3,412 Btu/kWh (EIA). Prices refreshed Oct 22, 2026.

How to Read It

  • Heat in your wood is the species’ million BTU per cord of air-dried wood times the cords you burn. Green wood delivers less, because part of the heat boils off water (USU Extension).
  • Heat delivered applies your stove’s EPA efficiency on the strict HHV basis. See HHV vs LHV efficiency.
  • Same heat, other fuels divides that delivered heat by each fuel’s heat content and furnace efficiency, then prices it at EIA’s latest figure for your state.
